Workouts in the Wild: our top Africa Born bush workouts

While our safaris do tend to involve a few cheeky tipples at sundown and some long lazy lunches, we are a pretty enthusiastic and active bunch here at Africa Born, and often find that our guests also like to stay fit while away from home. 

Both Sam and I have been scampering around the bush and splashing about in the Indian Ocean since childhood. Being active and keeping fit is part of who we are. And when you have some of the most incredible wild and rugged landscapes on your doorstep, it’s a total privilege to pull on a pair of running trainers, dust off your bike or unfurl your kite and make the most of the beauty that surrounds you.

Here are our top bush workouts - audience participation very much encouraged, we love it when guests join the fun…

Run with the Maasai and Samburu

Both the Maasai and the Samburu are incredible natural athletes, known for their speed and endurance. The perfect jogging buddy, we hear you say! Running on safari is beyond comparison - the backdrop is, of course, idyllic and the prospect of a chance encounter with wildlife is a perfect distraction from those burning quads.

Top tip: Don’t rush it - take pit stops to admire the indigenous flora with your knowledgeable guide. 

Hiking and mountaineering in sub-Saharan Africa

Every year we lead guests on epic mountain climbs and highland treks: be it attempts to summit Mount Kenya, Mount Kilimanjaro or the lesser-known Rwenzori Mountains on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, or trekking the Matthews Mountain or Aberdares. Topping out in Africa is on another level - the extraordinary variety of flora and fauna you encounter en route, the sunrises, the peace and solitude, the unearthly beauty.

Top tip: Pack light but smart. Bring moisture-wicking, warm layers to stay comfortable in changing conditions. And don’t forget to break in your trekking boots at home before your trip - blister-free feet make all the difference on the trail!

E-biking in the bush

Across the many private conservancies we visit with guests, there are miles of trails to explore: perfect to navigate with the added pedal power of an e-bike! Fully immerse yourself in the African bush on a two-wheeled adventure - a brilliant way to take in the scenery and wildlife.

Top tip: Opt for lightweight layers and a buff, which we’ll give you on arrival - these go a long way in managing the mix of dust, sun, and wind.

Safari soccer with the camp team

It’s no coincidence that soccer is the most popular sport the world over. Regardless of your faith, race or creed, you’ll find common ground on the soccer pitch. The Africa Born team love to kick a ball around with guests and - when word gets round - the local community often pitch up too!

Top tip: Don’t worry if you’re not any good - join in! It’s one of the best ways to connect and share a few laughs.

Kite surfing in the Indian Ocean

Kite surfing is a great way to blow away the cobwebs during the beach element of your safari.

For those doing a beach and bush safari combo, there are plenty of options to get active and explore the beautiful Swahili coast. Most private villas, islands and boutique hotels offer a vast range of ocean based activities to keep you moving. From kitesurfing and snorkelling to stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking, there’s something for everyone.

Top tip: Watamu is an Africa Born favourite for some serious ocean action. The glassy creek is perfect for wakeboarding and waterskiing, while the windy beaches are a kitesurfer’s paradise.

Racket sports in the bush and at the beach

You might be surprised to hear that quite a few of our properties out in the bush and at the beach have some seriously impressive courts. Be it tennis or pickle ball, there’s always an opportunity to brush up on that backhand.

Top tip: You’ll need suncream and a hat to be match fit this close to the Equator - don’t forget to pack both!

Workouts in the wild

Those keen to keep fit in camp can make the most of the yoga, HIT workout and weight training facilities in our Africa Born mobile camps. Meanwhile, most of the bush and beach properties we visit with guests all have well-equipped gyms. Whether it’s an early morning stretch before heading out for the day or a full workout in the cool of the evening, you’ll find everything you need to stick to the routine while on safari.

Top tip: Don't forget to pack your favourite workout gear - decent trainers, yoga pants and a pair of shorts, as it can get quite toasty over summer months.

And finally walking - anywhere and everywhere you can

A walking safari offers total immersion - the sights and sounds of the bush surround you and it’s frankly a must for any guest. We have the very best guides to expertly lead you through some of East Africa’s finest National Parks and private conservancies - tracking wildlife, climbing to otherwise-inaccessible viewpoints and taking in the odd refreshing dip in the river or surprise bush breakfast en route. 

Top tip: Carry your Africa Born water bottle to keep hydrated. Our new bottles have a carry handle making them super easy to travel with.
